Lift Where You Stand
Small acts, offered where you are, can carry more weight than you ever realize.
A daily devotional adapted from The Drive podcast
Years ago, while teaching, I used a simple object lesson to show my students how much difference one person can make.
I would sit on a large piece of particle board and ask a strong student to try lifting me alone. No matter how hard they tried, they could barely raise one edge. A few more students joined—still no success. Then I invited everyone to gather around the board and lift together. To their surprise, I was lifted easily into the air.
Then came the real lesson.
I asked if they thought they could lift me using only one hand each. They did.
Then just one finger each.
And again—they lifted me.
What seemed impossible became effortless when everyone contributed exactly where they stood.
Lift Where You Are Planted
A similar principle appears in a story shared by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, who once helped move a heavy piano. After struggling with positioning and strength, someone made a simple suggestion: “Let’s all stand close together and lift where we stand.” The piano rose easily.
That phrase—lift where you stand—captures a powerful truth about life.
We all stand in different places. Different roles. Different seasons. Sometimes places we didn’t choose. But what defines us isn’t where we stand—it’s what we do there.
The Quiet Power of Small Acts
I’ve seen a single act change an entire moment.
A student bringing another student into a group so they wouldn’t sit alone.
Children surprising a tired parent by cleaning the house.
Neighbors showing up with meals, shovels, or simply presence.
Friends appearing at just the right time during life’s hardest moments.
Often, the people doing the lifting never realize how much weight they helped carry.
Even Christ taught this principle clearly: “He that is greatest among you shall be your servant.” He lifted wherever He stood—and invites us to do the same.
Every Role Is Sacred Ground
At work—do your part with care and integrity.
At school—include, encourage, and never underestimate your influence.
At home—serve, love, and show up fully.
In your community—be the kind of neighbor you’d hope to have.
The smallest effort, offered consistently, can lift families, classrooms, teams, and hearts.
You don’t need a new position, more strength, or better circumstances.
You only need willingness.
Today’s Daily Challenge
As you move through today, ask yourself:
Where am I standing right now—and what is one small thing I can do to lift here?
Do it quietly.
Do it sincerely.
Do it without needing recognition.
And don’t be surprised if, in lifting others, your own heart feels lighter too.
