Dad, Look What I Made!

If you’re not creating, you’re slowly decaying.

“Dad, look what I made!”

That phrase has echoed through my house for years.

Drawings. Paintings. LEGO castles. Backdrops for imaginary worlds. Smoothie competitions. Choreographed dances. Short plays. Hand-sewn doll clothes. Boondoggle key chains.

Kids create constantly.

They don’t need permission.
They don’t need applause.
They just create.

And somewhere along the way… many of us stop.

Creation Is Who You Are

Of all the titles God could claim, one stands near the top:

Creator.

The Bible begins with creation. Not rules. Not correction. Creation.

Look at the world around you:

  • The diversity of plants

  • The complexity of animals

  • The uniqueness of people

  • The endless beauty in nature

God loves creating.

And He hasn’t stopped.

Only now, much of His creation is happening inside you.

He is creating:

  • Growth

  • Character

  • Perspective

  • Strength

  • Joy

  • Purpose

Creation is not just something God does.

It is something you inherited from Him.

When we stop creating, we slowly drift out of alignment with who we are meant to be.

Routine without creation turns into boredom.
Boredom turns into stagnation.
Stagnation turns into decay.

When we are not building something new, we are letting something old fall apart.

The Seven Rules of Creation

Let me offer you seven principles that can reignite creation in your life.

Rule 1: Accept That Creation Is Essential

If life feels dull or empty, ask yourself:

What am I creating?

Creation is not optional for a fulfilled life. It is foundational.

When it goes unfulfilled, so do we.

Rule 2: Create Things That Enliven the Soul

In scripture, God describes His creations this way:

“Yea, all things which come of the earth… are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart… to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul… to be used, with judgment, not to excess…”

That’s a powerful framework.

Create things that:

  • Benefit others

  • Please the eye

  • Gladden the heart

  • Nourish the body

  • Enliven the soul

If what you’re building makes someone smile — including yourself — you’re on the right track.

Rule 3: It Starts With Visualization

Before anything is built physically, it is built mentally.

I once looked at a sloped patch of grass in our backyard and imagined a sandbox for my little girls.

I had never built one before.

But I could see it.

So I grabbed a shovel.

One step at a time, that mental picture became real.

Visualization activates the same parts of the brain as physical action. The mind often cannot tell the difference.

If you can see it clearly enough, you can begin building it.

Rule 4: God Builds Step by Step

There’s a story in scripture of a prophet commanded to build a boat — something he had never done before.

He didn’t receive the entire blueprint at once.

He was shown how to build it “from time to time.”

A little at a time.

Creation with God is rarely instant.

It is incremental.

You take the next step you understand — and the next piece of direction comes.

Sometimes you just have to put the boat in the water and trust it will float.

Rule 5: Create What Is True to You

As I built this podcast, one phrase kept surfacing in my research:

Authenticity.

Create what fills you up first.

Not what you think others want.
Not what trends demand.
Not what impresses.

Create what gladdens your heart.

Authenticity almost always resonates.

Because it’s real.

Rule 6: Experience Creation

You are meant to create — and to experience creation.

Go outside.

Watch a sunset.

Go hiking.

Build something with your kids.

Put the phone down and let creation wash over you.

But remember balance.

God’s creations are not meant to be used “in excess.”

Rest. Create. Experience. Return. Repeat.

Rule 7: God Is Still Building You

Perhaps the greatest creation underway is you.

C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity:

“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house… You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. One He intends to come and live in Himself.”

Sometimes the construction hurts.

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense.

But He is not finished.

And neither are you.

Anchoring Quote

“Creation is the lifeblood of life… if we are not creating, we are decaying.”

That isn’t just motivational language.

It’s spiritual truth.

You were not designed for passive consumption.

You were designed to build.

Reflection

Where has creation disappeared from your life?

Have your days become:
Wake up → work → scroll → sleep?

What could you create this week that:

  • Brings joy?

  • Strengthens a relationship?

  • Inspires someone?

  • Challenges you?

It doesn’t have to be massive.

A project.
A memory.
A meal.
A conversation.
A vision.

Creation restores alignment.

Today’s Daily Challenge

Create something today.

Anything.

  • Build something small.

  • Start a project.

  • Write a paragraph.

  • Plan a trip.

  • Make the biggest ice cream sundae you’ve ever seen with your kids.

  • Watch a sunset without your phone.

Or simply sit and visualize what you want to build next.

Then take one step toward it.

Because when you create, you come alive.

And when you come alive, everyone around you feels it.

Thank you for being part of this creation with me.
