Don’t Miss the Sunset

The moments that matter most in life… are often the ones we almost miss.

The Moment That Became Everything

A couple summers ago, my daughters and I stumbled onto something simple…

A sunset.

We were out on a hike, nothing special planned, and just happened to catch it at the perfect time. The sky lit up with colors—orange, gold, red, even hints of pink and purple.

We just sat there and watched.

No phones.
No rush.
No distractions.

Just… being there.

After that, we were hooked.

We started chasing sunsets—finding different places, different views. Some of my favorites weren’t even anything extravagant…

Just sitting on a rock by the Great Salt Lake eating sandwiches.
Or on a quiet porch in Idaho.

But what I remember most?

Wasn’t the sky.

It was the look on my daughters’ faces.

What Actually Matters Most

There’s been a massive study—over 70 years, tracking tens of thousands of children—trying to answer one question:

What helps kids succeed in life?

And the answer wasn’t what you might expect.

It wasn’t money.
It wasn’t status.
It wasn’t perfect circumstances.

It was simple things like:

  • talking and listening

  • being emotionally present

  • reading together

  • spending time together

In other words…

Just being there.

The Lie of “Quality Time”

We hear that phrase all the time—quality time.

And somehow, we’ve turned it into:

  • expensive activities

  • packed schedules

  • perfectly planned experiences

But the truth is…

Quality time isn’t complicated.

It’s quiet.

It’s simple.

It’s sitting…
talking…
listening…

And actually being present.

Why We Miss It

The problem isn’t that we don’t care.

It’s that we’re busy.

Running from one thing to the next.
Trying to do more.
Trying to keep up.

And in the process…

We miss what matters most.

There’s a powerful reminder shared in the transcript:

“The circus keeps coming back… but childhood doesn’t.” — Arthur Gordon

Let that sink in.

Work will always be there.
Tasks will always be there.

But these moments?

They don’t last forever.

A Gentle Reminder We All Need

Sometimes the reminder comes from unexpected places.

A child once looked up and said:

“Daddy, Jesus says, ‘Slow down.’” — Neil L. Andersen (retelling an experience)

That might be one of the most powerful pieces of advice we could ever follow.

Slow down.

Because when you slow down…

You start to see what you’ve been missing.

The Deeper Truth

This isn’t just about kids.

It’s about life.

The best moments:

  • don’t require planning

  • don’t require money

  • don’t require perfection

They just require…

your presence.

And if we’re not careful…

We’ll spend our lives chasing everything…

And miss the things that matter most.

Anchoring Quote

“No other success can compensate for failure in the home.” — David O. McKay

Practical Reflection

Take a moment and ask yourself:

When was the last time I truly slowed down?

Not multitasking.
Not half-listening.

But fully present?

And more importantly…

Who in your life needs more of that from you?

Today’s Daily Challenge

Do one simple thing today:

Slow down.

  • Go for a walk with your child or spouse

  • Sit and have a real conversation

  • Put your phone away for 30 minutes

  • Watch a sunset

No big plan.

No pressure.

Just be there.

Closing

Life moves fast.

Too fast sometimes.

But you don’t have to match its pace.

Because the moments that matter most…

aren’t found in the rush.

They’re found in the pause.

So today…

Slow down.

Look around.

And don’t miss the sunset.
