The Ark Did Not Need Saving
Scripture:
“And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.”
— 2 Samuel 6:6
Quote:
President David O. McKay taught:
“It is a little dangerous for us to go out of our own sphere and try unauthoritatively to direct the efforts of a brother.”
Reflection:
The story of Uzzah can feel hard to understand at first.
The ark of the covenant was one of the most sacred objects in Israel. It represented the presence, covenants, and holiness of God among His people. The Lord had given specific instructions about how the ark was to be carried and who was authorized to handle it.
But as the ark was being moved, the oxen stumbled. Uzzah reached out to steady it.
On the surface, it may look like Uzzah was only trying to help. But the deeper lesson is that sacred things must be handled in the Lord’s way. Good intentions do not replace reverence, obedience, order, or authority.
The ark did not need saving.
The people needed teaching.
That principle still matters today. Sometimes people think the Church needs to be rescued by their opinions, pressure, criticism, or personal agenda. Sometimes they assume they know better than prophets, apostles, bishops, parents, or leaders the Lord has called.
But Jesus Christ stands at the head of His Church.
That does not mean we never ask questions. It does not mean we never seek understanding. Faithful questions can be part of sincere discipleship.
But steadying the ark happens when concern turns into control — when we begin to assume authority the Lord has not given us.
There is spiritual safety in humility. There is safety in sustaining priesthood keys. There is safety in trusting that God is able to do His own work.
Our job is not to control the ark.
Our job is to faithfully serve in the stewardship the Lord has given us.
Today’s Challenge:
Think about one area where you may be tempted to criticize, resist, or assume you know better than a parent, leader, prophet, or the Lord’s established order. Pray for humility and ask Heavenly Father to help you seek understanding while staying faithful.

As you study 2 Samuel 6, look for the difference between wanting to help and acting within the stewardship or authority God has given.
