No More Divided Hearts
Elijah’s question on Mount Carmel invites us to stop wavering and follow the Lord with our whole heart.
Scripture:
“And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him.” — 1 Kings 18:21
“And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.” — 1 Kings 18:39
Quote:
President Russell M. Nelson taught:
“Nothing invites the Spirit more than fixing your focus on Jesus Christ.”
Reflection:
Elijah’s question on Mount Carmel is one of the most direct questions in scripture:
“How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him.”
The people of Israel had drifted far from the Lord. Baal worship had become common among the Lord’s own covenant people. These were not just pagan priests from a distant civilization. This was happening among Israel — the people who had been delivered, blessed, taught, and invited into covenant with God.
That shows how far spiritual drift can go.
Elijah gathered the people and the priests of Baal. The priests of Baal called on their god for hours, but nothing happened. There was no voice. No answer. No power.
Then Elijah repaired the altar of the Lord.
That detail matters. Before the fire came down, the altar had to be repaired. In a way, that broken altar represented Israel’s broken worship, neglected covenants, and divided hearts.
Then Elijah prayed, and the Lord answered by fire.
This miracle was not just about proving Elijah was right. It was not just a dramatic contest. The Lord was trying to point His people back to the true God and to the prophet who could help guide them home.
And Elijah’s question still matters today.
Most of us are not choosing between Jehovah and Baal. But we do know what it feels like to be pulled in two directions. We may want God, but we may also want the approval of the world. We may want the peace of the gospel, but still hold on to habits that take peace away. We may want to feel close to the Savior at church, camp, or FSY, but then live differently online, with friends, or in private.
That is what a divided heart feels like.
Jesus Christ does not invite us to follow Him because He wants to control us. He invites us to follow Him because He wants to heal us, strengthen us, forgive us, guide us, and save us.
God does not want half of your heart because He wants to bless all of you.
So maybe the question today is:
Where do I need to stop wavering?
If the Lord is God, follow Him.
Follow Him with your choices.
Follow Him with your trust.
Follow Him with your worship.
Follow Him with your heart.
Today’s Challenge:
Repair one altar today.
Choose one spiritual habit or part of your discipleship that needs to be strengthened. Pray more sincerely, read your scriptures, repent, listen to the prophet, attend church with more purpose, or let go of one thing that has been dividing your heart.
