Stay in the Center

There is safety in staying close to the Lord.

In the Book of Numbers, a king named Balak wanted Balaam to curse Israel. He offered rewards and pressure. He tried to persuade Balaam to say something different than what God wanted him to say.

But Balaam answered:

“If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.”

That is a powerful statement.

Balaam was saying, in essence, “No amount of pressure, popularity, reward, or recognition is worth stepping outside the word of the Lord.”

That matters for teenagers today.

You live in a world full of voices trying to pull you in different directions. Some voices say, “Do less. It does not really matter. You do not need to follow that commandment. You do not need to listen to the prophet. You do not need to be that committed.”

Other voices may push in the opposite direction and make the gospel feel harsher, more extreme, or more complicated than the Lord intended.

But Balaam’s statement teaches a steady principle:

Do not go beyond the word of the Lord to do less or more.

The safest place is not on the edge of discipleship. The safest place is centered in Jesus Christ, His gospel, His commandments, His Church, and His living prophets.

Bishop Glenn L. Pace taught:

“There are some of our members who practice selective obedience. A prophet is not one who displays a smorgasbord of truth from which we are free to pick and choose. However, some members become critical and suggest the prophet should change the menu. A prophet doesn’t take a poll to see which way the wind of public opinion is blowing. He reveals the will of the Lord to us.”

That does not mean discipleship is always easy. It does not mean you will never have questions. It does not mean you will understand everything immediately.

But it does mean there is safety in trusting the Lord more than the pressure around you.

Elder Neil L. Andersen taught:

“When you are faced with a test of faith, stay within the safety and security of the household of God. There is always a place for you here. No trial is so large we can’t overcome it together.”

The world may offer attention, approval, comfort, or shortcuts. But Jesus Christ offers something better: safety, peace, direction, forgiveness, strength, and eternal life.

Stay close to Him.

Stay centered.

Reflection

Where do you feel the most pressure to move away from the word of the Lord — either by doing less than He asks or by making things more extreme than He intends?

Today’s Challenge

Write down one way you can stay more centered in the word of the Lord this week. It might be following prophetic counsel, keeping a commandment more intentionally, studying the scriptures, or choosing not to compromise when pressure comes.

Closing Thought

The safest place for your soul is close to Jesus Christ.

When the world pulls, pressures, and promises easy rewards, remember Balaam’s words:

“I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.”
