Technology is supposed to serve us.
Our phones help us communicate, navigate, work, learn, photograph our lives, listen to music, and stay connected to people we care about.
But every once in a while, it may be worth asking a slightly uncomfortable question:
Who is actually in control?

What This Resource Is About
Human beings have a deep desire to be free.
Children want to feed themselves, dress themselves, buckle themselves into the car, and eventually make more and more of their own decisions.
Teenagers especially begin craving independence.
That desire for freedom is good.
But there is another side to freedom that we don’t talk about as often:
Being free also requires learning to govern ourselves.
There are obvious things capable of controlling a person.
But some of the strongest influences in our lives can be much more subtle.
Technology is one of them.
Think about your phone.
How often do you reach for it without consciously deciding to?
How quickly do you check a notification?
Can you sit in an empty room without pulling it out?
Can you leave social media alone for a few hours?
Could you wake up tomorrow morning and go through your entire morning routine without checking your phone?
Those questions are not really about technology.
They are about self-mastery.
One of the stories I shared in this episode came from a friend who had dinner with a world-famous boxer.
Near the end of dinner, the boxer still had some steak left on his plate. Instead of eating it, he simply stared at it.
When asked why, he explained that he was proving to himself that the food did not have power over him.
He had power over it.
That story may sound extreme, but there is something important in it.
Sometimes we need to prove to ourselves that we can say no.
Not because the thing itself is necessarily bad.
But because we need to know we are still the one choosing.
And perhaps nowhere is that practice more relevant today than with the small device most of us carry everywhere we go.
Key Takeaways
A useful tool can still begin controlling us. Something does not have to be inherently bad to become unhealthy.
Ask two revealing questions: Can I comfortably go without it? Would I be okay without it for a while?
Self-control creates freedom. The ability to choose not to use something is an important part of genuinely choosing to use it.
Use small boundaries. You might decide not to check your phone until after your morning routine, keep it away during meals, or intentionally take breaks from social media.
Teach children self-control, not merely compliance. Parents can set necessary limits while gradually helping children learn how to govern themselves.
That may ultimately be the goal of healthy technology use:
Not getting rid of technology.
Not becoming afraid of it.
Not pretending we don’t enjoy it.
Simply being able to look at the device in our hand and know:
You serve me. I don't serve you.
