Jeremiah 31-39 and Lamentations | “I Will

Turn Their Mourning into Joy”

This week’s Come Follow Me for Teens Study & Teaching Guide gives parents and teachers a ready-to-use way to help youth explore Jeremiah 31–33; 36–39; and Lamentations 1; 3 and the theme “I Will Turn Their Mourning into Joy”—without having to build the lesson from scratch.

Through three connected teaching paths, youth will discover how Jesus Christ can change their hearts, give them courage to do what's right, and renew their hope when life gets difficult or they fall short.

In “Written in Our Hearts,” youth will explore the Lord's promise to write His law in our hearts (Jeremiah 31:33) and discover why knowing the gospel isn't the same as allowing it to change us. Through connections with Abinadi, King Benjamin's people, and Alma's searching questions, they'll consider the difference between simply going through the motions of discipleship and experiencing genuine conversion. They'll learn how covenants, ordinances, and the Holy Ghost help us become more like Jesus Christ.

In “Courage to Do What's Right,” youth will discover the remarkable contrast between King Zedekiah, who struggled to follow God's counsel because he feared others, and Ebed-melech, a servant who courageously stood up for Jeremiah. They'll explore why knowing what's right and having the courage to do it aren't always the same thing, and how trusting God can help them stand for their beliefs, resist peer pressure, and make faithful choices even when doing so is uncomfortable or unpopular.

In “New Every Morning,” youth will explore one of the most hopeful promises in Lamentations: “His compassions fail not. They are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22–23). They'll discover how the Savior's mercy makes repentance, forgiveness, and new beginnings possible. Through Jeremiah's surprising purchase of a field during Jerusalem's siege, they'll learn what it means to trust God's promises when the future seems uncertain—and consider His powerful question: “Is there any thing too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27).
