Come Follow Me for Teens: "He Hath Borne Our Griefs, and Carried Our Sorrows" (Isaiah 58-66)

Josh Downs Isaiah 58-66 I The Redeemer Shall Come to Zion

“The Redeemer Shall Come to Zion”

This week on Come Follow Me for Teens, we study Isaiah 58–66 and the theme “The Redeemer Shall Come to Zion.”

These chapters give us one of the clearest descriptions anywhere in scripture of what the Savior came to do—and then show us two powerful ways we can open our lives more fully to His help.

Isaiah says the Redeemer would come “to bind up the brokenhearted,” “to proclaim liberty to the captives,” and to give “beauty for ashes.”

Centuries later, Christ stood in the synagogue at Nazareth, read those very words, and declared:

“This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

We’ll talk about what it means for the Savior to bring beauty from experiences that feel broken, painful, or beyond repair—and why redemption does not always mean erasing the past. Sometimes He builds something beautiful from what remains.

Then Isaiah asks:

“Is not this the fast that I have chosen?”

We’ll look at why fasting is about much more than simply going without food. Isaiah connects fasting with powerful promises of light, healing, guidance, answered prayer, and the breaking of spiritual yokes. We’ll also explore how fasting can teach self-mastery while helping us seek strength greater than our own.

Finally, Isaiah invites us to:

“call the sabbath a delight.”

The Savior later taught that “the sabbath was made for man.” That changes the question from “What am I allowed to do on Sunday?” to:

“What did God design the Sabbath to do for me?”

This week is ultimately about more than fasting or Sabbath observance. It is about the Redeemer—the One who heals broken hearts, frees captives, strengthens us in battles we cannot win alone, and can take the ashes of life and create something beautiful from them.

The practices are not the power. The Savior is.

Isaiah 58–66 | “The Redeemer Shall Come to

Zion”

This week’s Come Follow Me for Teens Study & Teaching Guide gives parents and teachers a ready-to-use way to help youth understand Isaiah 58–66 without having to build the lesson from scratch.

Through three Christ-centered teaching paths, youth will explore beauty for ashes, the spiritual power of fasting, and why the Sabbath was made for us.

Isaiah describes a Savior who came to bind up the brokenhearted, free captives, comfort those who mourn, and give “beauty for ashes.” Youth will connect Isaiah 61 with the Savior’s declaration in Luke 4:

“This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

In “Is Not This the Fast That I Have Chosen?” youth will discover the remarkable promises Isaiah connects with fasting—light, healing, guidance, answered prayer, and the breaking of spiritual yokes. They’ll also explore self-mastery, the Savior’s wilderness temptations, and His teaching that some difficult battles require “prayer and fasting.”

In “Call the Sabbath a Delight,” youth are invited to move beyond simply asking, “What am I allowed to do on Sunday?” and instead ask:

“What did God design the Sabbath to do for me?”

The goal is not simply better rule-keeping, but deeper connection with the Savior.
