Run Toward the Storm

Sometimes the fastest way through a storm is straight into it.

In Yellowstone National Park there is a fascinating behavior that buffalo are known for. When storms begin to roll across the plains, most animals instinctively run away from the storm. They try to escape the wind, rain, and lightning by moving in the opposite direction.

Buffalo do something very different.

Instead of running away from the storm, they run directly toward it.

At first that might seem strange, but there is actually a very practical reason for it. By running straight into the storm, buffalo move through it faster. The storm passes over them more quickly, and they spend far less time in the harsh weather than the animals that try to outrun it.

Animals that run away from the storm often end up staying inside the storm much longer.

It’s a powerful lesson for life.

Running From Life’s Storms

Most of us have the natural instinct to avoid difficult things.

When challenges appear, we often try to run away from them. We avoid hard conversations. We delay decisions. We ignore problems hoping they will eventually disappear on their own.

But just like the animals that run away from the storm, avoiding our problems usually keeps us stuck in them longer.

Storms in life are inevitable.

Challenges, disappointment, conflict, and hardship will come to each of us. The question is not if storms will come, but how we will face them when they do.

Courage Changes the Storm

When we choose to face our storms head-on, something powerful happens.

Problems that once seemed overwhelming begin to shrink. Fear starts to lose its power. What once felt impossible begins to feel manageable.

Courage doesn’t remove the storm.

But it changes how long we stay in it.

Scripture often reminds us that God does not promise a life without difficulty, but He does promise strength to face those difficulties.

The Apostle Paul taught this simple but powerful truth:

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
—Philippians 4:13

With God’s help, even life’s fiercest storms can be faced with faith and courage.

What Storm Are You Facing?

Each of us has storms that show up in different ways.

For some, it might be a difficult relationship.
For others, it might be fear, anxiety, failure, or uncertainty about the future.

The temptation is always the same: run away.

But sometimes the fastest way through the storm is to face it.

To step forward.

To move into the wind and rain with faith that God will strengthen you as you go.

A Powerful Reminder

One of the greatest lessons we can learn in life is this:

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision that something else is more important than fear.”

Storms don’t last forever.

But the growth that comes from facing them often does.

Reflection

What storm might you be avoiding right now?

Is there a conversation you’ve been putting off?
A decision you’ve been delaying?
A challenge you’ve been hoping will disappear?

Instead of running away from it, consider what it might look like to face it with faith.

Sometimes the storm becomes smaller the moment we turn toward it.

Today’s Daily Challenge

Think of one challenge you’ve been avoiding.

Take one small step today toward facing it.

You don’t have to solve everything at once.

Just take the next step forward.

Like the buffalo, moving into the storm may be the quickest way through it.

Grateful you’re here for these daily reflections.
