Small Changes, Big Results
By small and simple things, great things come to pass.
One day while building with Legos with my daughters, I noticed something interesting.
When they first started building, they were focused on the big pieces—the walls, the roof, the large blocks that gave the structure its shape. But as the project continued, something became clear: it wasn’t the big pieces that finished the project.
It was the small pieces.
Those tiny little Lego bricks—the ones that seemed almost insignificant—were the ones that completed the details and held everything together.
Life works much the same way.
We often believe that big success requires big changes. We imagine that dramatic transformations happen all at once. But most meaningful progress in life actually happens through very small improvements repeated consistently over time.
The Power of 1% Improvements
There is a powerful concept known as the 1% Marginal Gains Rule.
The idea is simple: if you improve just 1% each day, those small improvements compound over time into remarkable results.
A famous example of this principle comes from the British Olympic cycling team. For many years they struggled to compete internationally. But when a new coach came in, he introduced a strategy of improving every possible part of the process by just a tiny amount.
They improved training routines by small percentages. They improved equipment slightly. They studied nutrition, sleep habits, and recovery techniques—looking for small ways to get better.
Each improvement seemed minor on its own.
But together they created massive change.
Within a few years, the team dominated Olympic cycling and became one of the most successful programs in the world.
Small improvements created extraordinary results.
God’s Pattern for Growth
The scriptures teach the same principle.
In the Book of Mormon we read:
“By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.”
—Alma 37:6
God rarely changes us all at once.
Instead, He invites us to improve step by step.
A little more patience today.
A little more kindness tomorrow.
A little more faith the next day.
Over time, those small efforts shape who we become.
The Danger of Waiting for Big Change
One of the greatest mistakes we make is believing that change must happen all at once.
We tell ourselves things like:
“I’ll start when I feel motivated.”
“I’ll change when life slows down.”
“I’ll work on it when the time is right.”
But progress rarely comes through sudden bursts of effort.
It comes through consistent small steps.
Small daily actions compound into powerful long-term results.
A Simple Truth
One of the most encouraging things about this principle is that it removes the pressure to be perfect all at once.
Instead of focusing on dramatic change, we can focus on steady improvement.
“Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.”
—Robert Collier
Small changes today can create a completely different life tomorrow.
Reflection
Think about an area of your life where you would like to improve.
Maybe it’s your health.
Maybe it’s your faith.
Maybe it’s your relationships or personal habits.
Instead of trying to change everything at once, ask yourself a simpler question:
What is one small step I can take today?
Today’s Daily Challenge
Choose one area of your life where you want to grow.
Then make one small improvement today—just 1%.
It might be reading a few verses of scripture, taking a short walk, offering a sincere compliment, or practicing a skill for a few minutes.
Small efforts may seem insignificant in the moment.
But over time, they create extraordinary change.
Grateful you’re here for these daily reflections.
