Guard Your Mind Like It Matters—Because It Does

What you allow into your mind will eventually shape your life.

The House That Told the Truth

Growing up, I noticed something interesting in different neighborhoods.

Most homes looked great.

  • lawns trimmed

  • flowers cared for

  • everything clean and in order

But every once in a while…

There was a house that had been let go.

Weeds everywhere.
Things dying.
Neglect showing.

And over time, I started noticing something deeper:

When the outside was falling apart…

Something on the inside usually was too.

Because eventually…

What’s happening inside always shows up on the outside.

The Lot That Became a Dump

There’s an analogy that perfectly explains this.

Think about an empty lot in a neighborhood.

At first, it’s just open space.

But if it stays unattended…

Things start to happen.

  • someone dumps grass clippings

  • then a few branches

  • then some trash

  • then more junk

And before long…

It’s a dumping ground.

Not because anyone planned it that way…

But because no one stopped it.

Your Mind Works the Same Way

Your mind is that lot.

And if you don’t protect it…

Things will get dumped there.

  • negative thoughts

  • comparison

  • anger

  • bitterness

  • fear

  • things that don’t build you up

And here’s the problem:

It rarely happens all at once.

It happens:

little by little.

What You Allow… You Keep

At first, certain things bother you.

You notice them.

They feel wrong.

But over time…

If you keep allowing them in…

They start to feel normal.

As taught in the transcript, even things that once shocked us can slowly become accepted if we leave them in our minds long enough.

The Signs You Need to Put Up

So what do you do?

You put up signs.

“No Trespassing.”
“No Dumping.”

Not just physically…

Mentally.

You decide:

  • what stays

  • what goes

  • what you allow

  • what you reject

Because if you don’t decide…

Something else will.

Cleaning Out What’s Already There

Let’s be honest.

Most of us already have some junk in there.

Things like:

  • resentment

  • jealousy

  • disappointment

  • shame

  • worry

And just like a physical wound…

It needs to be cleaned out.

Even if it hurts.

As described in the transcript, healing often begins by removing what’s infected—even when it’s uncomfortable.

The Power of Letting It Go

There’s a powerful story shared in the transcript about a man who carried deep bitterness after losing his wife.

He had every reason to hold onto it.

But he was given simple counsel:

“Leave it alone.”

Not because it didn’t matter…

But because holding onto it would destroy him.

And eventually…

He chose to let it go.

The Peace That Comes From Within

You can’t always control:

  • what people say

  • what happens to you

  • what life throws your way

But you can control:

what you keep inside.

And through Jesus Christ, we’re promised something powerful:

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you… Let not your heart be troubled.” — John 14:27

That peace doesn’t come from the world around you.

It comes from what you allow within you.

Anchoring Quote

“The more good we fill our lives with, the less room there will be for anything bad.” — Boyd K. Packer

Practical Reflection

Take a moment and ask yourself:

What has been “dumped” into my mind lately?

  • thoughts

  • emotions

  • influences

Now ask:

Is this building me… or breaking me?

Today’s Daily Challenge

Do a mental cleanup today:

  • identify one negative thought or pattern

  • choose to let it go

  • replace it with something uplifting

And then:

Put up your signs.

No Trespassing.
No Dumping.

Closing

Your mind is powerful.

It shapes your thoughts.
Your actions.
Your life.

So don’t leave it unguarded.

Don’t let anything stay that doesn’t serve you.

And don’t be afraid to clean it out when needed.

Because when what’s inside is right…

What shows up on the outside will follow.
