The Secret to Happiness Isn’t What You Think
Happiness isn’t found in what you get… it’s found in what you give.
The Workshop I’ll Never Forget
A while back, my daughters and I visited a small place called Tiny Tim’s Toy Factory.
It wasn’t flashy.
No big signs.
No fancy setup.
Just a simple workshop… covered in sawdust… filled with small wooden cars.
Cars that weren’t being sold.
They were being given away.
Thousands of them.
To kids all over the world.
And at the center of it all was an 82-year-old man who had made it his life’s mission to bring joy to others.
Before we left, he looked at my girls and said:
“Do you want to know the secret to happiness?”
Of course they said yes.
And then he said something so simple…
But so powerful:
“If you want to be happy, you have to do something… and if you do something for somebody else—that’s happiness.”
The Lie We’ve All Been Sold
We’re taught something very different.
We’re told:
If you get more… you’ll be happy
If you achieve more… you’ll be fulfilled
If you have more… you’ll feel complete
But if that were true…
Why do so many people who “have everything” still feel empty?
The Truth About Abundance
Here’s something profound from the transcript:
Abundance and lack both exist in your life—at the same time.
You can always focus on:
what you don’t have
what’s missing
what’s not enough
Or…
what you do have
what’s already good
what you can give
And whichever one you focus on…
Becomes your reality.
Why More Doesn’t Equal Happiness
There’s a surprising pattern in life:
The more people have…
Often the less they give.
And the less people have…
Often the more willing they are to share.
Why?
Because when you have more…
It’s easier to hold on.
When you have less…
It’s easier to let go.
The Warning We Often Ignore
There’s a powerful story in scripture about a wealthy man who had done everything right.
He asked what he still lacked.
And when he was told to give what he had to others…
He couldn’t do it.
And he walked away—not happy—
But sorrowful.
As taught in the transcript, possessions didn’t bring him joy… they held him back from it.
The Principle That Changes Everything
Here’s the shift:
Happiness isn’t tied to what you have…
It’s tied to what you do with what you have.
And more specifically:
What you give.
The Pattern We Can Follow
Look at the life of Jesus Christ.
He didn’t accumulate.
He gave.
His time
His love
His attention
His life
And through that…
He showed us where real joy comes from.
Anchoring Quote
“The true way to happiness is to do something to add to others’ happiness.” — Heber J. Grant
Practical Reflection
Take a moment and ask yourself:
Where am I looking for happiness right now?
In what I want?
Or in what I can give?
Now ask:
What do I already have…
That someone else might need?
Today’s Daily Challenge
Do one simple thing today:
Make someone smile.
Give a compliment
Send a message
Offer help
Show kindness
Give your time
Don’t overthink it.
Just give.
Closing
Happiness isn’t hidden.
It’s not reserved for the lucky.
It’s not waiting on something more.
It’s already within your reach.
Because the moment you shift from:
“What can I get?”
To:
“What can I give?”
Everything changes.
So go find someone today…
And give them a reason to smile.
You might just find…
That you’re the one who ends up happier.
