The Art of Letting Go

Sometimes the only thing holding you back… is what you refuse to release.

Letting go isn’t easy.

In fact, sometimes it feels almost impossible.

Just ask any parent trying to convince their kids to part with a mountain of stuffed animals.

We hold on to things we love—even when they’re overflowing, unnecessary, or even holding us back.

And the truth is…

We don’t just do that with stuff.

We do it with life.

The Things We Struggle to Release

We hold on to:

  • Relationships that have already ended

  • Pain from the past

  • Anger and grudges

  • Fear and doubt

  • Habits that no longer serve us

All while wondering…

👉 Why can’t I move forward?

The Monkey Trap We Don’t See

There’s a story about how monkeys are trapped using something incredibly simple.

A hollow coconut is filled with food and has a small hole—just big enough for the monkey to slide its hand in.

Once it grabs the food…

It can’t pull its hand back out.

Not because it’s stuck.

But because it refuses to let go.

Even as danger approaches…

It holds on.

And that’s what traps it.

Sound Familiar?

It’s easy to think:

“Just let go!”

But then we realize…

👉 We’re doing the exact same thing.

Holding on to things that are:

  • Hurting us

  • Limiting us

  • Keeping us stuck

Not because we can’t let go…

But because we won’t.

Why Letting Go Is So Hard

Letting go feels like loss.

Even when what we’re holding onto isn’t good for us.

Because at least it’s familiar.

At least it’s known.

And sometimes…

We’re afraid that what comes next won’t be better.

What God Is Trying to Do

Here’s something powerful:

God doesn’t force us to let go.

He invites us.

He offers something better.

Just like a parent offering a child something safer than what they’re holding.

He waits for us to choose.

Moving to a Higher Way of Living

There are different ways we can live:

  • A life driven by selfishness

  • A life driven by rules and consequences

  • Or a life driven by love, growth, and transformation

Christ invites us into that higher way.

But to live it…

We have to let go of what’s weighing us down.

What You Might Need to Release

Sometimes it’s obvious.

Sometimes it’s not.

But if you’re feeling stuck…

It’s worth asking:

👉 What am I still holding onto?

Because growth requires release.

You can’t move forward…

If you won’t let go.

“There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” — C. S. Lewis

Practical Reflection

Take a quiet moment and think:

  • Is there something in your life you know you need to let go of?

  • Something you’ve been holding onto—even though it’s hurting you?

Be honest with yourself.

You probably already know what it is.

Today’s Daily Challenge

Choose one thing to begin letting go of today.

It doesn’t have to be perfect.

It doesn’t have to be immediate.

But it does need to begin.

👉 Talk to God about it
👉 Ask for help
👉 Take one small step

And trust…

That what’s ahead is better than what you’re leaving behind.

Closing

Letting go isn’t losing.

It’s making space.

Space for healing.
Space for growth.
Space for something better.

So loosen your grip.

Trust the process.

And take the step forward you’ve been holding back from.
