Follow the Light, Not the Fear

Fear may keep you safe… but faith is what helps you live.

The Phrase That Stuck With Us

My daughters and I have a favorite movie: The Croods.

There’s a line in it that always makes us laugh:

“Never not be afraid.”

It’s the dad’s rule for survival.

And honestly… it makes sense.

Fear keeps you cautious.
Fear keeps you protected.

But as the story unfolds…

You realize something important:

Fear doesn’t just keep you safe from danger…

It also keeps you safe from life.

When Fear Becomes a Cage

At first, the family stays hidden.

Avoiding risk.
Avoiding danger.
Avoiding the unknown.

But in doing so…

They also avoid:

  • new experiences

  • growth

  • joy

  • discovery

And that’s the danger of fear.

It doesn’t just limit what you do.

It limits who you become.

The Small Steps That Prepare You

Here’s something powerful to remember:

You’re not expected to leap into the biggest fear right away.

Life doesn’t work that way.

As shared in the transcript, God prepares us gradually—step by step—for what’s ahead.

  • David didn’t face Goliath first

  • He faced smaller battles before

  • The Jaredites didn’t cross the ocean first

  • They made smaller journeys before

That’s how growth works.

A little at a time.

The Moment Fear Shows Up

I remember standing at the edge of a cliff in southern Utah.

My daughters had just worked their way up—jump after jump—until they reached the top.

And then they turned to me:

“Dad… your turn.”

Instant fear.

I don’t love heights.

But there I was…

Three girls watching.

No way out.

So I climbed up…

Took a breath…

And jumped.

And you know what?

It wasn’t the jump I remember most.

It was the feeling after.

Relief.
Excitement.
Confidence.

That’s what happens when you move through fear instead of away from it.

The Command We Often Ignore

Here’s something that might surprise you:

One of the most repeated commands in scripture is this:

“Be not afraid.”

Not suggested.

Commanded.

Why?

Because God knows something we forget:

Fear is not required for you to move forward.

Faith is.

What Actually Changes Things

Let’s be honest.

What does worrying actually do?

Does it fix anything?

Does it solve the problem?

Not really.

As humorously noted in the transcript:

“The things I worry about never happen.”

Fear drains you.

Faith strengthens you.

The Light That Leads You Forward

There’s a moment near the end of The Croods where everything comes together.

The question is asked:

“What’s the point of all this?”

And the answer is simple:

“To follow the light.”

That’s it.

Not to eliminate fear.

But to choose something stronger.

The Source of That Light

That light isn’t just symbolic.

It’s real.

Jesus Christ said:

“I am the light of the world.” — John 8:12

And when you follow that light…

You don’t eliminate darkness.

But you gain direction through it.

Anchoring Quote

“The future is as bright as your faith.” — Thomas S. Monson

Practical Reflection

Take a moment and ask yourself:

Where is fear holding me back right now?

  • A decision?

  • A conversation?

  • A step forward?

Now ask:

What would it look like to move forward anyway?

Today’s Daily Challenge

Take one step toward the light today:

  • Do something you’ve been avoiding

  • Have a conversation you’ve been putting off

  • Try something new

  • Choose faith over fear in one moment

You don’t need to conquer everything.

Just take one step.

Closing

Fear will always be there.

But it doesn’t have to lead.

Because you were never meant to live a life controlled by fear.

You were meant to move forward.

To grow.

To experience.

To become.

So when you feel fear…

Don’t run from it.

Don’t live in it.

Look for the light.

And follow it.
