Don’t Underestimate the Little Things

A few small choices today… can completely change where your life ends up.

The Error That Cost Everything

In 1979, a passenger jet took off for what was supposed to be a scenic flight over Antarctica.

Everything seemed normal.

Experienced pilots.
Clear plan.
Routine trip.

But there was one small problem.

The flight coordinates had been adjusted… by just two degrees.

That tiny shift—barely noticeable—put the plane directly in the path of a massive volcano hidden by clouds.

By the time the warning systems went off…

It was too late.

The plane crashed.

Every life on board was lost.

All because of a small deviation.

The Way Life Works

It’s easy to hear a story like that and think:

That’s extreme.

But the principle?

It’s happening in our lives every day.

Because life isn’t usually changed by one massive decision.

It’s changed by small ones… repeated over time.

The Drift You Don’t Notice

You don’t wake up one day miles off course.

You drift there.

  • one small compromise

  • one small bad habit

  • one small ignored warning

And at first?

It doesn’t seem like a big deal.

But over time…

That one degree becomes miles.

The Other Side of the Principle

Here’s the good news:

It works the other way too.

  • one small good decision

  • one small act of discipline

  • one small positive habit

Those stack.

And over time…

They lead you somewhere better than you imagined.

The Power of a Simple Habit

Which brings us to something almost too simple:

Make your bed.

It sounds small.

Because it is.

But that’s the point.

As Admiral William H. McRaven taught:

“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” — William H. McRaven

Why?

Because it’s the first win of the day.

One completed task.

One intentional action.

And that momentum builds.

Why the Small Things Matter Most

There’s a powerful truth in this:

If you can’t do the little things right…
it’s hard to do the big things right.

The small things:

  • build discipline

  • create structure

  • shape identity

They train you to become someone who follows through.

A Spiritual Perspective

Even in one of the most significant moments in history…

after His resurrection…

Jesus Christ took time to do something small.

“The napkin… was wrapped together in a place by itself.” — John 20:7

Order.

Intentionality.

Attention to detail.

Even in the biggest moments…

the small things still mattered.

Anchoring Quote

“If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right.” — William H. McRaven

Practical Reflection

Take a moment and ask yourself:

Where am I drifting… even just a little?

  • a habit slipping

  • a standard lowering

  • a small choice I keep ignoring

Now ask:

What small adjustment could get me back on course?

Today’s Daily Challenge

Start simple.

Make your bed.

Seriously.

Then take it one step further:

Choose one more small thing to do right today.

  • finish something you’ve been putting off

  • clean up something small

  • follow through on something simple

Stack the wins.

Closing

Your life won’t be shaped by one big moment.

It will be shaped by small decisions—made consistently.

So don’t underestimate the little things.

They are not little.

They are direction.

And today…

you get to choose yours.
