Discover the Scriptures for Yourself

Josiah’s story teaches that God’s word can awaken your heart and help you find your way back to Him.

Scripture:
“I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.”
—2 Kings 22:8

Devotional Thought:
During King Josiah’s reign, something powerful happened.

The book of the law was found in the house of the Lord.

That may seem strange. How could the word of God be lost in the Lord’s house?

But that is exactly what had happened.

The scriptures were there, but they had been neglected. They were close, but they were not shaping the people. They were available, but they were not being heard.

That can happen today too.

You might have scriptures on a shelf. You might have Gospel Library on your phone. You might hear verses in church, seminary, or family scripture study. But there is a difference between having access to the scriptures and discovering them for yourself.

At some point, every disciple has to “find the book.”

That does not mean every scripture study moment will feel dramatic. It does not mean every verse will immediately change your life. But as you make room for the word of God, there will be moments when a verse speaks to you. A phrase will stand out. A story will feel personal. A warning will protect you. A promise will strengthen you. A truth will help you see yourself, your choices, or the Savior more clearly.

When Josiah heard the words of the book, his heart was softened. He realized the people had drifted from God, and he wanted to come back.

That is one of the great blessings of scripture.

God’s word can wake us up without giving up on us. It can correct us without condemning us. It can show us where we have drifted and still point us back to Jesus Christ.

The scriptures are not just old words on a page.

They are one of the ways the Lord helps you hear His voice.

Quote:
President Spencer W. Kimball taught:

“I am convinced that each of us, at some time in our lives, must discover the scriptures for ourselves—and not just discover them once, but rediscover them again and again.”

Reflection:
Have I truly discovered the scriptures for myself, or are they mostly something other people talk about?

Today’s Challenge:
Before you read today, pause and pray: “Heavenly Father, what do You want me to see?” Then read slowly until one phrase stands out. Write it down and act on it.
