God’s Commandments Protect Your Freedom

Israel’s captivity teaches that sin may promise freedom, but Jesus Christ is the One who truly makes us free.

Scripture:
“Because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed his covenant...”
—2 Kings 18:12

Devotional Thought:
The children of Israel probably did not think they were choosing captivity.

They may have thought they were choosing freedom. Freedom to ignore prophets. Freedom to break covenants. Freedom to follow other gods. Freedom to do what they wanted instead of listening to the Lord.

But over time, those choices did not make them more free.

They led them into captivity.

That is one of Satan’s oldest tricks. He tries to make God’s commandments look restrictive and sin look exciting, independent, and free. But sin never keeps its promises. It may promise happiness, confidence, control, popularity, or escape, but it often leaves people feeling trapped, ashamed, anxious, addicted, lonely, or far from God.

God’s commandments are not meant to control you.

They are meant to protect your freedom.

They are like guardrails on a dangerous road. The guardrail is not there to ruin the drive. It is there to keep you from going over the edge.

Jesus Christ gives commandments because He loves you. He sees where roads lead. He knows what certain choices can do to your heart, your mind, your spirit, your relationships, and your future. He wants you to be free — not just free to choose, but free from the things that can hurt and bind you.

And here is the hope:

Even when we make choices that lead us away from Him, Jesus Christ does not stop reaching for us.

Captivity is not the end of the story.

The Savior came to deliver captives, heal broken hearts, forgive sins, and bring God’s children home. If you feel trapped by a habit, a mistake, a secret, a fear, or a pattern you do not know how to break, you are not beyond His reach.

He still loves you.
He still calls you.
He still has power to deliver you.

Quote:
Lehi taught:

“Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh... And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death...”
—2 Nephi 2:27

Reflection:
Is there anything in my life that is starting to take away my peace, honesty, confidence, freedom, or closeness to God?

Today’s Challenge:
Choose one commandment or standard to live more intentionally today. Instead of seeing it as a restriction, ask: “How might the Lord be using this to protect my freedom?”
