God Can Do a Lot with a Little
Gideon’s story teaches that your weakness is not too small for God’s strength.
Gideon did not see himself as a hero.
When the Lord called him to help deliver Israel from the Midianites, Gideon felt weak, small, and unqualified. He said:
“Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”
But the Lord answered:
“Surely I will be with thee.”
That promise changed everything.
Gideon eventually gathered an army to face the Midianites, but the Lord told him the army was too large. If Israel won with thousands of soldiers, they might think they had saved themselves. So the Lord reduced the army until only 300 men remained.
Humanly speaking, it made no sense.
The Midianite army was described as being like grasshoppers for multitude, with camels as countless as the sand by the sea. Gideon’s 300 were not stronger, bigger, or more impressive. But they had something more important than numbers.
They had the Lord.
With trumpets, empty pitchers, and torches, Gideon and his men surrounded the camp. The Lord caused confusion among the Midianites, and Israel was delivered.
This story is powerful because we all face moments when we feel outnumbered, overwhelmed, or not enough. Maybe you feel that way at school, in your family, in your testimony, in your future, or in a responsibility you have been given. Maybe you look at what is ahead and think, “I can’t do this.”
Gideon’s story reminds us that the real question is not, “Am I enough?”
The better question is, “Is God with me?”
Elder Gérald Caussé taught:
“The Lord often places His servants in situations with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. In this manner He pushes us to humble ourselves and to rely solely on His strength.”
God does not need you to be impressive before He can work through you. He needs your trust, your humility, and your willingness to follow Him.
You may feel like you only have a little courage, a little faith, a little experience, or a little confidence. But in the Lord’s hands, a little can become enough.
Reflection
Where in your life do you feel outnumbered, overwhelmed, or not enough?
How could you rely more on the Lord’s strength instead of only your own?
Today’s Challenge
Write down one challenge you are facing right now. Under it, write this phrase:
“Surely I will be with thee.”
Then pray and ask the Lord to help you face that challenge with His strength.
Closing Thought
Gideon’s victory was not about 300 strong men. It was about one powerful God. With Him, you can face things you could never overcome alone.
