When You Don’t Know What Comes Next
Ruth’s story reminds us that faith often means taking the next right step before we can see the whole path.
Sometimes life changes in ways we did not expect.
Plans fall apart. Friendships change. Families go through hard things. The future feels uncertain. And when that happens, it can be tempting to wait until everything makes sense before we choose faith.
But Ruth teaches us something powerful.
After her husband died, Ruth had every reason to go back to the life she had known before. Naomi, her mother-in-law, was returning to Bethlehem, and Ruth did not know what kind of future waited for her there. She did not know if she would be accepted. She did not know how she would survive. She did not know what God was preparing.
But Ruth chose faith anyway.
She said:
“Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.”
—Ruth 1:16
That is not just a statement of loyalty to Naomi. It is a statement of faith in the Lord.
Ruth did not know the whole story yet. She did not know she would meet Boaz. She did not know her family line would eventually lead to King David and Jesus Christ. She simply chose the next faithful step.
That matters for you too.
You may not know exactly how your future will work out. You may not know what friendships will last, what opportunities will come, or how certain prayers will be answered. But you can still choose faith today.
You can still choose to follow Christ.
You can still choose kindness.
You can still choose courage.
You can still choose to stay close to God, even when life feels uncertain.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught:
“With each step of faith on the path of discipleship, we grow into the beings of eternal glory and infinite joy we were designed to become.”
Ruth’s story reminds us that God can do amazing things with one faithful step.
You do not have to see the whole path to trust the One who does.
Today’s Challenge
Think of one area of your life that feels uncertain right now. Instead of trying to solve the whole thing at once, ask yourself:
What is the next faithful step I can take today?
Then take that step.
Closing Thought
Ruth did not know what her future would look like, but she knew who she was choosing to follow.
When you choose Christ, even in uncertainty, He can lead you toward blessings and purposes greater than you can see right now.
