God’s Laws Lead to Happiness

Psalm 1 Shows Where a Life Rooted in God Can Lead

Have you ever wondered why God gives commandments?

Sometimes they can feel restrictive, especially when the world around you seems to be saying the exact opposite.

Do what feels right.

Follow whatever makes you happy.

Don’t let anyone tell you how to live.

Psalm 1 begins with a very different idea.

It describes a person who chooses not to build life around the opinions and influence of the world. Instead, that person “delight[s] in the law of the Lord.”

Then the psalm gives us an image:

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water” (Psalm 1:3).

Think about that for a minute.

A healthy tree does not survive because it is constantly searching for somewhere better to stand. It grows because its roots are planted near a source that continually gives it what it needs.

God’s commandments can do something similar for us.

They give our lives roots.

They help protect relationships, strengthen families, keep our minds and bodies safer, invite the Holy Ghost, and help us become the kind of people capable of experiencing lasting happiness.

Psalm 1 begins by saying:

“Blessed is the man.”

The idea behind that word includes happiness and a life that is flourishing.

That does not mean everyone who follows God will have an easy life.

Even the most faithful disciples experience disappointment, grief, temptation, loss, and difficult questions.

But there is a difference between going through a storm with deep roots and going through one without them.

The psalm contrasts the rooted tree with something called chaff.

Chaff is light and easily blown by the wind.

It has no roots.

Whatever direction the wind moves, the chaff goes with it.

There will always be winds trying to move you.

Popular opinion.

Friends.

Social media.

Pressure to fit in.

Your own emotions.

People telling you what should matter most.

Psalm 1 invites you to ask a simple question:

Where are my roots?

You do not have to understand every commandment perfectly before trusting God.

Sometimes we understand His wisdom only after we have lived His teachings long enough to see the fruit.

That fruit might be peace.

Trust.

A clear conscience.

Stronger relationships.

Greater confidence before God.

Protection from choices that could have changed your life in painful ways.

Over time, you may discover something many faithful disciples eventually learn:

God’s laws work.

They are not designed to keep the best parts of life away from you.

They are designed to lead you toward them.

Scripture

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord. …

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.”

—Psalm 1:2–3

Reflection

What is one commandment or teaching from God that has already blessed your life?

Where do you need stronger spiritual roots right now?

Today’s Challenge

Choose one commandment or prophetic teaching that you want to live more intentionally today.

Then pay attention to what happens.

Did it bring peace?

Protection?

Confidence?

A better choice?

A stronger relationship?

Tonight, write down one blessing you noticed.

Christ-Centered Thought

Jesus Christ never asked us to follow a path He was unwilling to walk Himself.

He perfectly followed the Father.

He showed us what obedience looks like, but He also showed us what it produces: love, strength, peace, holiness, and complete trust in God.

Following Jesus Christ will not remove every difficult season.

But He can help you become like the tree in Psalm 1—rooted deeply enough in truth that the winds around you do not decide who you become.
