You May Only Need Light for the Next Step
God’s Word Can Help You Know Where to Go
Have you ever wished God would just show you the whole plan?
You want to know what choice to make, what will happen afterward, whether everything will work out, and where your life will eventually lead.
Instead, sometimes all you get is enough light to see the next step.
Psalm 119 gives us one of the most familiar images in scripture:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
A lamp in ancient times did not light an entire road.
It illuminated what was nearby.
You could see enough to recognize where to place your foot and then move forward.
Maybe that is one reason the psalmist compared God’s word to a lamp.
We often want a spotlight on the entire future.
God frequently gives us light for what comes next.
His word can provide that light.
Sometimes a scripture tells you exactly what you need to remember.
Sometimes a general conference message answers a question you have been carrying.
Sometimes a teaching from a prophet changes the way you see a decision.
Other times, the answer is not a specific instruction. It may simply be a truth that gives you enough courage to take another step.
You may read:
“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
And realize you need to stop panicking.
You may read:
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Psalm 56:3).
And realize fear does not have to decide what you do next.
You may read:
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart” (Psalm 34:18).
And realize that feeling broken does not mean God has moved farther away.
That is one of the amazing things about scripture.
The same verse can mean something different to you during different seasons of your life because you are different.
You may have read it before.
But now you need it.
This is also why learning to search the scriptures for yourself matters so much.
Teachers, parents, and leaders can show you where to look.
They can share verses that have helped them.
But eventually, you need to learn how to open the scriptures with your own question and search until something begins to shine.
Sometimes the verse you find will give you an answer.
Sometimes it will give you peace while you wait for one.
Sometimes it will correct you.
Sometimes it will remind you that Christ is still there.
And sometimes that small amount of light is exactly enough.

Reflection
Is there a decision, question, fear, or problem in your life where you need more light right now?
What has God already taught that might help you take the next step?
Today’s Challenge
Open the book of Psalms and search for something you need.
Maybe you need:
Peace.
Courage.
Direction.
Forgiveness.
Hope.
Confidence that God hears you.
Read until one verse or phrase stands out.
Write it down and ask:
What light is the Lord giving me through this verse?
Then take one step based on what you received.
Christ-Centered Thought
Jesus Christ said:
“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).
Every true piece of light ultimately points toward Him.
You may not know everything that is coming.
You may not be able to see every turn in the road.
But Christ does.
And sometimes faith is simply trusting the light He has already given you enough to take one more step.
You do not always need the entire path illuminated.
Sometimes you only need enough light to keep following Him.
