What Is This Doing to My Heart?

1 Samuel 16:23

Scripture:
“And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.”
— 1 Samuel 16:23

Saul was troubled. Something inside him was not right. His servants noticed and suggested finding someone who could play music for him.

David came and played the harp.

The scripture says Saul was refreshed, he was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

That is a powerful reminder that music can influence the heart.

Music can calm us. It can encourage us. It can bring back memories. It can help us worship. It can invite peace. It can help us feel close to God.

But music can also carry messages into our minds and hearts that pull us in the wrong direction. A song can make anger, lust, disrespect, rebellion, or darkness feel normal if we let those messages play over and over again.

The question is not only, “Is this song allowed?”

A better question is:

“What is this song doing to my heart?”

Is it helping me feel peace, light, courage, and closeness to God? Or is it pulling my thoughts, feelings, and desires somewhere darker?

Not every song has to be a hymn. There is plenty of music that is simply fun, clean, and enjoyable. But because music is powerful, we should pay attention to the influence it is having on us.

David’s music helped Saul feel relief.

Your music can help you too.

Quote:
The First Presidency taught:

“Hymns can lift our spirits, give us courage, and move us to righteous action. They can fill our souls with heavenly thoughts and bring us a spirit of peace.”

Reflection:
What music do you listen to most often, and how is it shaping your thoughts, emotions, desires, and ability to feel the Spirit?

Today’s Challenge:
Do a simple music audit today. Look at the songs you listen to most and ask, “What is this doing to my heart?” Then choose one song or playlist that helps you feel peace, faith, courage, or closeness to God.

Remember:
What you allow into your heart can either invite light or pull you away from it.
