The Lord Sees Your Heart

1 Samuel 16:7–12

Scripture:
“For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”
— 1 Samuel 16:7

When Samuel came to Jesse’s family to anoint the next king of Israel, Eliab seemed like the obvious choice. He looked strong, capable, and kingly.

But the Lord saw something Samuel could not see.

One by one, Jesse’s sons passed before Samuel, but none of them were chosen. Finally, Samuel asked if there were any more children. David, the youngest, had not even been invited in at first. He was out keeping the sheep.

Others may have overlooked David, but the Lord did not.

That is an important message for every teenager.

The world often judges by outward things — appearance, popularity, confidence, talent, mistakes, clothes, followers, grades, social status, or first impressions. Sometimes we judge others that way. Sometimes we even judge ourselves that way.

But the Lord sees deeper.

He sees your heart. He sees your desires. He sees your effort. He sees your pain. He sees your quiet faith. He sees your repentance. He sees your potential.

And because He sees your heart, He can also help you learn to see others more like He does.

Righteous judgment does not mean pretending choices do not matter. It means looking deeper than the surface. It means being slow to condemn. It means remembering that people are more than one mistake, one label, one weakness, or one first impression.

The Lord saw a king in the shepherd boy others forgot to invite.

He sees more in you too.

Quote:
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught:

“Remember, heaven is filled with those who have this in common: They are forgiven. And they forgive.”

Reflection:
Who is someone you may have judged too quickly or mostly by what you could see on the outside?

Today’s Challenge:
Pray to see one person more the way the Lord sees them. Look for something about their heart, effort, struggle, or potential that you may have missed.

Remember:
The Lord does not just see what you look like. He sees who you are becoming.
