Don’t Sell Your Birthright

Temporary pleasure is never worth eternal regret.

Esau was hungry. Jacob had stew. In a moment of appetite, Esau traded his birthright — something eternal — for something temporary (Genesis 25:29–34).

The scriptures say plainly: “Thus Esau despised his birthright.”

He didn’t lose it accidentally. He undervalued it.

The Modern Bowl of Pottage

We may not trade birthrights for soup — but we face similar trades every day.

Trade integrity for popularity.
Trade purity for pleasure.
Trade honesty for advantage.
Trade eternity for “right now.”

It always feels urgent in the moment. It rarely feels urgent in hindsight.

Think Long

Elder Richard G. Scott taught:
“Don’t give up what you most want in life for something you think you want now” (Ensign, May 1997).

Esau thought he was about to die. He wasn’t. He just didn’t want to wait.

Patience protects promises.

Reflection

Every temptation is a trade offer.
The question is: What are you giving up?

Will you choose the temporary water of the world — or the living water of Christ?

“Many Esaus have given up something of eternal value in order to satisfy a momentary hunger for the things of the world.” — President Dallin H. Oaks, “Spirituality,” Ensign, Nov. 1985
