You Don’t Have to Be Like Everyone Else
1 Samuel 8:5–7, 19–20
Scripture:
“Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
— 1 Samuel 8:5
“That we also may be like all the nations…”
— 1 Samuel 8:20
Israel had been called to be different. They were the Lord’s covenant people. They were supposed to be led by God, trust His prophets, and stand apart from the nations around them.
But in 1 Samuel 8, Israel looked at the world around them and wanted to be like everyone else. They asked Samuel for a king, not just because they wanted leadership, but because they wanted to fit in. They wanted to look like the other nations.
That same pressure is real for teenagers today.
Sometimes the hardest part of following Jesus Christ is not that we do not know what is right. It is that doing what is right can make us feel different. It can feel easier to laugh at the joke, lower the standard, follow the trend, hide what we believe, or go along with the group.
But God has never asked His people to simply blend in with the world.
You do not have to become like everyone else to matter. You do not have to lower your standards to belong. You do not have to be ashamed of being different when that difference comes from following Jesus Christ.
The world may pressure you to fit in, but the Savior invites you to stand with Him.
Quote:
Elder Richard G. Scott taught:
“No one intends to make serious mistakes. They come when you compromise your standards to be more accepted by others. You be the strong one. You be the leader. Choose good friends and resist peer pressure together.”
Reflection:
Where do you feel the strongest pressure to be like everyone else?
Today’s Challenge:
Choose one place where you feel pressure to blend in or compromise. Decide today how you will respond before the pressure comes.
Remember:
You belong to God. You do not have to be like all the nations.
