Small Choices Shape the Heart
David’s fall teaches us to notice the little decisions that move us closer to or farther from the Lord.
Scripture:
“But David tarried still at Jerusalem.” — 2 Samuel 11:1
“he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.” - 2 Samuel 11:2
“And David sent messengers, and took her.” — 2 Samuel 11:4
Quote:
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught:
“Small errors and minor drifts away from the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ can bring sorrowful consequences into our lives. It is therefore of critical importance that we become self-disciplined enough to make early and decisive corrections to get back on the right track.”
Reflection:
David’s fall did not begin with one huge decision. It began with smaller choices — being where he should not have been, looking where he should not have looked, sending for someone he should have left alone, and then trying to cover what he had done.
Those little “switch points” changed the direction of his heart.
That matters for us too. Most of the time, spiritual danger does not announce itself loudly. It starts quietly. A choice to hide something. A choice to keep watching. A choice to ignore a prompting. A choice to justify something we know is not right.
But the opposite is also true. Small righteous choices can turn our hearts back toward God. A prayer. A scripture. A text to a good friend. A conversation with a parent or bishop. A decision to repent quickly instead of hide longer.
David’s story is a warning, but it also points us to hope. Through Jesus Christ, we can stop, turn around, and come back into the light.
Today’s Challenge:
Notice one small “switch point” in your life today. Choose the option that turns your heart closer to the Lord.
