Ask for an Understanding Heart

Solomon’s prayer teaches us to seek wisdom, discernment, and help from God.

Scripture:
“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart… that I may discern between good and bad.” — 1 Kings 3:9

Quote:
Elder David A. Bednar taught:
“Being quick to observe is a vital preparation to receive the spiritual gift of discernment.”

Reflection:
When the Lord told Solomon he could ask for anything, Solomon did not ask for fame, popularity, money, or power. He asked for “an understanding heart.”

That is more than being smart. An understanding heart can see clearly. It can discern between good and evil. It can recognize truth. It can notice people who need help. It can sense when something is pulling us away from God.

Teenagers need that kind of heart every day.

You need it when you are choosing friends. You need it when you are deciding what to watch, listen to, post, or believe. You need it when someone around you is hurting but trying to act like everything is fine. You need it when the world says one thing and the Lord’s prophets teach another.

An understanding heart helps you notice what matters spiritually.

Sometimes discernment helps you see danger. Sometimes it helps you see goodness. Sometimes it helps you recognize a prompting from the Holy Ghost. Sometimes it helps you realize that someone needs your kindness.

Solomon’s request teaches us that one of the best things we can pray for is not just an easier life, but a wiser heart.

Today’s Challenge:
Pray today for an understanding heart. Ask Heavenly Father to help you discern one good thing to do, one temptation to avoid, or one person to lift.
