Why God Gives Commandments
Exodus 19–20; 24; 30–34 Why God’s laws are meant to bless, protect, and lead us to Him
A lot of people hear the word commandments and think rules, pressure, or restriction. The world often acts like God’s laws take freedom away. But Exodus 20 teaches something very different. When God gave the Ten Commandments, He was not trying to make life smaller. He was trying to lead His people to Him. He was giving them a foundation for peace, holiness, and happiness.
God’s commandments are not random. They protect what matters most. They teach us to put God first, honor parents, tell the truth, stay morally clean, respect others, and live with integrity. The Lord knows what leads to peace and what leads to pain. That is why He gives commandments at all. He is not trying to keep good things from us. He is trying to keep us from the heartache that comes when we live outside His will.
Sometimes sin looks fun at first. Sometimes obedience looks harder in the short term. But the Lord sees farther than we do. He knows that “wickedness never was happiness,” and He knows that true joy is never found by pushing Him aside. Real peace comes from living in harmony with Him.
President Thomas S. Monson taught, “God’s commandments are not given to frustrate us or to become obstacles to our happiness. Just the opposite is true.”
That changes the way we see obedience. Commandments are not barriers. They are invitations to become more like God and experience the kind of life He wants for us.
Reflection
Which commandment do you think protects happiness the most, and why?
Today’s Challenge
Think of one commandment you may have seen more as a burden than a blessing. Ask God to help you see it more clearly and obey it more willingly this week.
Closing
God gives commandments because He loves you. Every commandment is meant to bring you closer to Him and protect the life He is trying to build in you.
