The Fundamentals That Change Everything
Sometimes the biggest problems in life aren’t solved by doing more—but by returning to what matters most.
I recently finished coaching my oldest daughter’s basketball team—one of the best experiences I’ve had as a father.
These girls worked hard. They improved. And while we didn’t win as many games as we hoped…
The growth was undeniable.
Early in the season, some didn’t know how to jump off the correct foot for a layup. Others didn’t understand basic defensive concepts.
So we simplified things.
We focused on the fundamentals.
Why the Basics Matter More Than We Think
A fundamental is something that forms the foundation—what everything else is built on.
And yet…
Because they’re so simple…
They’re often the very things we neglect.
There’s a famous story about Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest football coaches of all time.
After a devastating championship loss, his team came into training camp ready to refine advanced strategies.
Instead, Lombardi held up a football and said:
“Gentlemen… this is a football.”
He started from the beginning.
Why?
Because he knew something most people forget:
👉 Mastering the basics is what creates excellence.
The Same Is True in Life
As I’ve worked with people over the years, I’ve noticed something consistent:
Behind almost every struggle…
There are neglected fundamentals.
Not complicated problems.
Simple things… that haven’t been done consistently.
And when those break down…
Everything else starts to follow.
The Four Physical Fundamentals
There are four foundational areas that impact nearly everything in your life.
1. Sleep
This is the most overlooked—and often the most impactful.
When sleep is off:
Energy drops
Focus fades
Emotions become harder to manage
Most adults need 7–9 hours… but many live on far less.
You can’t perform at your best when you’re running on empty.
2. Nutrition
What you eat becomes how you feel.
When you fuel your body poorly… you feel it.
When you fuel it well… everything improves.
Start seeing food not just as enjoyment—but as fuel.
3. Water
Simple… but powerful.
Your body depends on it for nearly everything:
Brain function
Energy
Digestion
Recovery
Yet most people don’t get enough.
Sometimes the fix isn’t complicated—it’s just a glass of water.
4. Exercise
We all know it matters.
But knowing isn’t the same as doing.
The real question is:
👉 Is it important enough to you?
Because we always make time for what we truly value.
The Real Problem Isn’t Time
Here’s the hard truth:
It’s not that we don’t have time.
It’s that we don’t always believe we’re worth the effort.
Think about it.
When something matters to you…
You protect it.
You invest in it.
You take care of it.
So what does it say about how we view ourselves…
If we neglect the very things that keep us healthy?
The Spiritual Fundamental
As important as physical health is…
There’s one more foundation that matters just as much:
Spiritual connection.
In the scriptures, when people were bitten by poisonous serpents, they were told to simply look at a brass serpent to be healed.
Some refused.
Why?
Because it seemed too simple.
Or… they didn’t believe it would work for them.
And we do the same thing today.
Prayer.
Scripture study.
Connecting with God.
Simple things.
But powerful.
And often neglected.
The Power of Simple, Consistent Action
So many of life’s problems can be traced back to fundamentals being out of place.
And most of the time…
We already know it.
We feel it.
We just haven’t acted on it.
But here’s the good news:
👉 You don’t need to fix everything at once.
You just need to start with one.
Anchoring Quote
“By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” — Book of Mormon (Alma 37:6)
Practical Reflection
Take a moment and ask yourself:
Where am I out of alignment?
Sleep
Nutrition
Water
Exercise
Spiritual connection
Which one needs attention most right now?
Today’s Daily Challenge
Pick one fundamental today.
Not all of them.
Just one.
And commit to improving it—even in a small way.
Go to bed earlier.
Drink more water.
Move your body.
Pray.
Start small.
Stay consistent.
Then build from there.
Closing
The game of life doesn’t get easier because you avoid the basics.
It gets easier because you master them.
So return to the fundamentals.
Build your foundation.
And watch how everything else begins to change.
