Bitter Doesn’t Have to Make You Bitter
The Savior can heal your heart without wasting your pain.
Life does not always go the way you hoped it would. Sometimes people disappoint you. Sometimes prayers seem unanswered. Sometimes you carry hurt that nobody else really sees. And when life feels bitter, one of the biggest dangers is letting that bitterness settle into your heart.
After crossing the Red Sea, the children of Israel came to water, but it was bitter. They were tired, thirsty, and frustrated. Then the Lord performed a miracle and made the water sweet. In that moment He taught them something powerful: “For I am the Lord that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26). That truth still matters. The Savior does not just help people survive hard things. He heals them in the middle of hard things. He can help you go through disappointment, pain, and unfairness without becoming bitter yourself. He can take what feels heavy and use it to soften your heart instead of harden it. He can help pain become a place where you grow closer to Him instead of farther away.
Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught, “Partaking of a bitter cup without becoming bitter is likewise part of the emulation of Jesus.”
Reflection Question
What is one hurt or disappointment you need to place more fully in the Savior’s hands?
Today’s Challenge
Pray honestly about one painful thing in your life and ask the Savior to heal your heart in it.
The Lord may not remove every hard thing immediately, but He can meet you in it. He can heal what life has wounded. He can make bitter waters sweet, and He can help you become stronger, softer, and more like Him through it all.
