Don’t Pitch Your Tent Too Close to the Edge

The choices we make about our influences can quietly shape the direction of our lives—for good or for harm.

Most people don’t plan to make bad choices. They just slowly get closer to the edge. That’s what happened to Lot.

Abraham and Lot were both blessed, but they made very different choices. When it came time to separate, Lot chose land that looked appealing—but it was dangerously close to the wicked city of Sodom.

“Lot… pitched his tent toward Sodom.”
(Genesis 13:12)

At first, Lot may have thought he could handle the influence. But over time, being near Sodom became living in Sodom. Eventually, his choices led to captivity and great loss.

Abraham’s father made a similar mistake. Though he repented and began the journey toward the promised land, he stopped short and settled in a worldly place—and slowly returned to his old ways.

The lesson is simple but powerful: it’s easier to avoid temptation than to resist it.

Staying close to Christ—and away from the edge—protects us. Small choices about friends, media, and priorities matter more than we often realize.

“Safety comes from staying close to the center.”
—President James E. Faust

Choosing Christ sometimes means choosing distance—from certain influences, habits, or environments. That choice isn’t about fear. It’s about wisdom.

Reflection Question:
Where in your life might you be getting a little too close to the edge?

Small Application:
Identify one influence you can step back from this week to stay closer to Christ and protect your spiritual strength.
